Avoiding End of Year Burnout
By Shaika Marcelin
The end of the year is approaching. It may seem like a daunting or even stressful time, with an overload of emails, assignments and priorities that need completing before folks break for the holidays (if they’re able to). It’s easy to become stressed in your workplace, household, or even in relationships. So as we approach this season, let's take some time to create healthy boundaries to avoid end-of-year burnout. No matter your position or job title, these tips can perpetuate a healthy balance in your work and personal life.
Wellness days
Encourage employees to stay home or log off when not feeling well. It’s important to take it easy on yourself; avoiding burnout means knowing when your body is telling you to rest.
Open communication
Create educational opportunities this month about managing stress, wellness and finances. For employers, create a safe place where everyone feels welcome to express concerns about the challenges they may face this season and be a safe space for them to talk and learn about ways to manage their health and finances.
Communicate and stay in touch with family and friends. Do not push your circle away, whether that's close friends, a partner or family; spend time with the people you love this season.
Prioritizing tasks
This season signals a message to most that a break is coming. At times, this can be the only thing getting us through the weeks leading up to end-of-year Try not to overload people with new material or tasks. Practice balance. When it comes to prioritizing tasks, split activities and to-do lists with group members.
Follow the Say No Paradox
You do not have to do it all. You can say “NO.” Take on less individual work and accomplish more; taking on what is important, almost crucial, and leaving the rest behind.
