About our speaker

Emi Sasagawa
Director Communications at the University of British Columbia (UBC)

Emi Sasagawa is a settler, immigrant, and uninvited guest living and working on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh and Selilwitulh Nations.

With a career dedicated to communications and marketing, Emi is an expert in issues management, strategic planning and organizational change management in the post-secondary education sector. Currently serving as the Director Communications at the University of British Columbia (UBC), she is responsible for the strategic direction in creating and maintaining a unified, integrated and centralized hub for all communications, along with brand building within the UBC Faculty of Arts.

In 2021, Emi received the inaugural President’s Staff Award for Advancing Anti-Racism and Inclusive Excellence for making significant contributions to the vision and goals of the university. Outside of UBC, Emi is a published author. Her debut novel Atomweight, by Tidewater Press, was selected by CBC Books as one of the works of Canadian fiction to read in the first half of 2023 and dubbed “a propulsive exploration of growth and becoming.”
